Sugar Glider Temperature Safety
Safe and optimal ambient temperature ranges, and the risks at either extreme.

Sugar gliders are small, and small animals lose and gain heat quickly. Stability matters more than hitting an exact number, and the most common real-world problems are not extreme weather — they are a vent blowing on a cage, an afternoon sunbeam, or a room that swings ten degrees overnight.

These are Glider Tome practical household-management figures drawn from long-term husbandry experience. They are not a published veterinary preferred range, biological comfort range, or thermoneutral range, and we do not present them as one.
What published veterinary guidance reports
- Broader environmental tolerance of roughly 60 to 90°F
- Thermoneutral, preferred conditions of roughly 80 to 88°F
Three different things
It helps to keep these separate, because they answer different questions.
- Thermoneutral conditions — the physiological band reported in veterinary references, roughly 80 to 88°F
- Environmental tolerance — the broader range an otherwise healthy glider can withstand, roughly 60 to 90°F
- Glider Tome household management — the steady 70 to 80°F most keepers can genuinely hold in a home, paired with stability, good placement, and attention to the animals
A temperature a glider can tolerate is not a temperature it should live in, and a practical household target is not a claim about physiology. Where the numbers differ, err toward stability and watch the animals rather than the thermostat.
Cold risks
Sustained cold can lead to:
- Lethargy and reduced activity
- Reduced appetite
- Increased energy demand just to stay warm
- Greater vulnerability in joeys, seniors, and unwell animals
Heat risks
Sustained heat can lead to:
- Heat stress
- Dehydration
- Respiratory distress
- Higher risk when humidity is also high
A note on humidity
We do not publish a numeric humidity range, because we have not found a defensible sugar-glider-specific veterinary source that establishes one. Published references discuss temperature but not target humidity. What is reasonable to say: high humidity combined with high heat increases heat stress risk, and very dry air paired with a cold room is worth watching. If someone quotes you an exact humidity percentage, ask where it comes from.
Cage placement is most of the job
Veterinary guidance is explicit on two points:
- Keep the cage away from heating and cooling vents
- Keep the cage out of direct sunlight
Add to that:
- Avoid exterior walls, draughty windows, and doors to outside
- Avoid attics, garages, sunrooms, and enclosed porches
- Avoid placing the cage directly above or beside radiators or heaters
- Gliders are nocturnal, so the daytime spot should be quiet as well as thermally stable
Monitor the cage, not the thermostat
A thermostat reports the hallway. The cage may be several degrees different.
- Put a thermometer at cage height, near the sleeping pouch
- Check it at the same time each day
- Look at the daily swing, not just the current reading
- A min/max thermometer tells you what happened overnight
When the room drifts out of range
Safe, low-risk responses first:
- Fix the cause — close the vent, move the cage, block the draught
- Adjust the room's temperature rather than the cage's
- Add extra fleece pouches and depth for a cold room; gliders self-regulate by nesting
- In heat, improve air circulation in the room, keep water fresh and available, and shade the cage from sun
- Move the whole cage to a more stable room if that is the practical answer
What we will not tell you to do: we do not publish a specific emergency heating or cooling protocol, because authoritative veterinary sources do not establish one. Heat lamps, heat rocks, heating pads under a cage, hot water bottles, and ice placed inside an enclosure all carry real burn, chill, and contact-injury risk in an animal this size. If you believe your gliders are in thermal danger, that is a call to your veterinarian, not a DIY project.
When it becomes a veterinary matter
Environment is your responsibility; the animal's condition is your veterinarian's. Seek veterinary advice if you see:
- Lethargy or weakness that does not resolve once the environment is corrected
- Laboured or open-mouth breathing
- Signs of dehydration such as sunken eyes or skin that stays tented
- Collapse, unresponsiveness, or an inability to right itself
- A glider that stays out of the pouch and unresponsive in a cold room, or one that is flat and unwilling to move in a hot one
Log the temperature reading alongside what you saw. It is genuinely useful information for a clinician.
