Sugar Glider Skin Tent Test
The skin tent test is a quick hydration observation, not a diagnosis. Learn how to perform it gently, interpret what you see, recognize other dehydration signs, and know when veterinary care is appropriate.

What is a skin tent test?
A skin tent test is a quick hands-on observation that can help you look for possible dehydration.
It checks skin elasticity, also called skin turgor. In a well-hydrated sugar glider, gently lifted skin should return to its normal position quickly after it is released. Skin that returns slowly or remains “tented” can be a sign of dehydration.
The tent test is useful as a screening clue. It is not a diagnosis, and it should not be used by itself to decide that a glider is hydrated, dehydrated, healthy, or safe to wait.
How to perform a tent test
Choose a moment when you can handle your glider gently and securely.
- Locate the loose skin over the upper back, between the shoulder blades.
- Using your fingers, gently lift a small fold of skin just enough to create a little “tent.”
- Do not pull hard, stretch the skin significantly, or use the gliding membrane.
- Release the skin completely.
- Watch how quickly it settles back into its normal position.
The goal is observation, not restraint. Sugar gliders should not be held or controlled by scruffing the skin.
What should I see?
In a well-hydrated glider, the skin should return to its normal position quickly after release.
If the skin settles immediately, that is a reassuring observation.
If the skin returns more slowly than expected, dehydration becomes more concerning.
If the skin remains visibly tented after release, dehydration should be taken seriously.
Veterinarian-reviewed sugar glider guidance describes skin remaining tented for more than about 1 to 2 seconds as concerning for dehydration.
Do not use the stopwatch as a diagnosis
The difference between one second and two seconds is not a home medical threshold.
You are looking at the overall response of the skin and the glider.
Skin elasticity can also be influenced by factors other than hydration, including body condition, weight loss, age, and the condition of the skin itself.
That means the tent test is one piece of information, not a pass-or-fail test.
A quick return does not prove that nothing is wrong.
A slow return should not be used to calculate a percentage of dehydration at home.
Look at the whole glider
Dehydration may appear alongside other changes.
Watch for:
- Dry mouth or nose
- Dull or sunken eyes
- Loose or inelastic skin
- Low energy or unusual lethargy
- Weakness or difficulty gripping and climbing
- Reduced food or water intake
- Abnormal breathing
- Tremors or seizures
The more concerning signs you see together, the less useful it becomes to keep testing at home.
The question changes from “Is my glider dehydrated?” to “Does my glider need veterinary evaluation?”
When should I call the vet?
A tent test that repeatedly returns slowly or leaves the skin visibly tented is reason to contact a glider-competent veterinarian promptly.
Dehydration can become serious quickly in sugar gliders, and veterinary treatment may include fluids as well as evaluation for whatever caused the dehydration in the first place.
Dehydration itself is often not the whole problem.
Reduced drinking, diarrhea, illness, pain, poor appetite, environmental problems, or another medical condition may be responsible for the fluid loss.
If your glider also has significant weakness, abnormal breathing, collapse, seizures, severe lethargy, or other serious signs, seek urgent veterinary evaluation.
What should I record?
If you are concerned, write down what you actually observed.
Useful information includes:
- When you first noticed the change
- Whether the skin returned quickly, slowly, or remained tented
- Appetite and drinking
- Recent weight and weight trend
- Urine and droppings
- Activity level
- Grip strength and ability to climb normally
- Any vomiting, diarrhea, injury, medication, diet change, or environmental change
- Whether the condition appears stable, improving, or worsening
These observations can be much more useful to a veterinarian than simply saying, “I think my glider is dehydrated.”
A tent test is an observation tool
The skin tent test can help you notice that something may be wrong.
It cannot tell you why it is happening.
It cannot determine the exact severity of dehydration.
It cannot rule out illness when the result looks normal.
And it should never delay veterinary care when the glider’s overall condition is concerning.
Use the tent test for what it does well: giving you one more observable piece of information about your glider’s condition.
Then look at that information alongside the animal’s behavior, weight, appetite, hydration signs, history, and overall pattern.
