Why Glider Tome recommends purified bottled or remineralised reverse-osmosis water for drinking, diet prep, and food washing.

Fresh water should always be available to your gliders. That part is not a preference or a debate — veterinary references are direct about it, and dehydration is described as potentially deadly in animals this small.
Everything beyond "fresh water, always available, in a clean container" is a judgement call about your water source. This article separates what veterinary sources establish, what water-quality authorities establish, and what is Glider Tome's own practice.
What veterinary guidance actually establishes
- Fresh water must be available at all times
- Water containers should be cleaned daily
- Signs of dehydration — dry mouth or nose, sunken eyes, skin that stays tented, low energy — warrant prompt veterinary attention
Published sugar glider veterinary references do not specify a water type. There is no veterinary standard naming tap, filtered, bottled, distilled, well, or reverse-osmosis water as required or as best. Anyone who tells you otherwise is describing a practice, not a published recommendation.
Know your water source
Water-source facts come from public-health authorities rather than veterinary references. In the United States, the CDC distinguishes two broad situations:
Public (community) water systems
- Regulated, treated, and routinely monitored for drinking-water standards
- Quality can still vary by region, season, and plumbing
- Utilities issue drinking water advisories when something changes; a "do not drink" advisory directs use of commercially bottled water for drinking and cooking
Private wells
- Not covered by public drinking-water regulations — the owner is responsible
- CDC advises testing well water at least annually for total coliform bacteria, nitrates, total dissolved solids, and pH
- Risk rises after flooding, heavy rain, or nearby land-use changes
Surface-water sources can also be affected by harmful algal blooms. Cyanobacteria can produce toxins that affect both people and animals, and bloom conditions fluctuate seasonally.
Human standards are not veterinary thresholds
Drinking-water regulations are written for human consumption. They are useful for understanding your source water, and they are the right lens for questions like "is my well safe" or "is there an advisory in effect." They are not sugar-glider-specific safety limits, and it would be wrong to convert a human contaminant threshold into a veterinary recommendation for a 100-gram animal. We don't do that here.
Water source is not the same as water treatment
Two separate questions get tangled together constantly:
- Source: where the water comes from — municipal system, private well, surface water
- Treatment: what happens to it afterwards — disinfection, carbon filtration, reverse osmosis, distillation, or nothing at all
A pitcher filter and a reverse-osmosis system are not doing the same job, and neither one changes the fact that you should know your source. Basic carbon filters are designed largely for taste and chlorine; they are not general-purpose contaminant removal.
Glider Tome's own practice
This section is community and domain practice, offered as a precaution rather than a veterinary requirement.
Many experienced keepers, including us, use purified bottled water or reverse-osmosis water with a remineralisation stage for drinking water and for diet preparation. The reasoning is consistency: small animals, small volumes, and a water source that does not change week to week. Remineralisation matters because fully demineralised water is not the goal.
Distilled water is not used as a sole long-term drinking source in glider care.
If you use your tap water instead, that is a reasonable choice — particularly on a monitored public system with no advisory in effect. If you are on a private well, test it on the schedule public-health guidance recommends.
Whatever you choose, apply it consistently to:
- Drinking water
- Staple diet preparation
- Mixing supplements
- Rinsing produce and dishes
Practical hygiene
- Refresh water daily, not just top it up
- Wash the container daily; biofilm builds up quickly in small bowls and sipper tubes
- If you use a bottle, check the sipper actually flows every single day
- Watch consumption — a sudden change in drinking is worth logging
Veterinary references require fresh water and clean dishes. They do not compare bottles with bowls, so use whichever your gliders reliably drink from, and verify it works daily.
